إطلالة من قمة عمان: جبل القلعة | A view from the peak of Amman: The Citadel

ما في مكان بعمان بخليك تحس بروح المدينة وتاريخها زي جبل القلعة. هاد المكان مش بس حجر وقصص قديمة، هو قلب عمان اللي بدأ تاريخه الثقافي من العصر الحجري الحديث (زي منطقة عين غزال) وازدهر عبر العصور. لما توقف هناك، أنت عم بتشوف جزء من مدينة محصنة بيرجع تاريخها للعصر البرونزي الوسيط (١٧٥٠-١٥٥٠ قبل الميلاد). بزيارتي الأخيرة، حبيت أوثق كيف هالأعمدة واقفة بشموخ وعم تطل على جبال عمان وبيوتها اللي بتحكي مية حكاية وحكاية.

The cultural history of Amman began in the Neolithic period (see Ain Ghazal) and flourished throughout the ages. The Amman Citadel (Al-Qal'a) is part of a fortified city dating back to the Middle Bronze Age (1750-1550 BC). In my recent visit, I wanted to capture how these ancient ruins stand tall, overlooking the hills of Amman—each with its own story. In this post, I’ll show you the Citadel through my eyes and lens.

سر الأعمدة الشامخة: معبد هرقل | The Secret of the Pillars: The Temple of Hercules

هاي الأعمدة اللي بتشوفوها هي بقايا "معبد هرقل" العظيم، اللي بناه الرومان بالقرن الثاني الميلادي تكريماً للبطل الأسطوري هرقل. المعبد كان رح يكون واحد من أضخم المعابد بالعالم، بس الحقيقة إنه ما اكتمل بناؤه وجزء كبير منه تدمر بالزلازل، وما ضل واقف منه إلا هالأعمدة اللي طولها بوصل لـ 10 أمتار. والقصة الأغرب إنه جنب الأعمدة في بقايا "إيد رخامية" ضخمة، بتقول لنا إن تمثال هرقل لو كمل، كان رح يكون طوله أكثر من 12 متر!. هالمكان مش بس حجارة، هو رمز للقوة والصمود اللي ميزت عمان عبر العصور.

These pillars are the ruins of the great "Temple of Hercules," built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD to honor the legendary hero. It was intended to be one of the largest temples in the world, but it remained unfinished, and much of it was later destroyed by earthquakes. Only these massive columns, standing 10 meters tall, remain today. Interestingly, near the columns lie fragments of a "giant marble hand," suggesting that the complete statue of Hercules would have reached over 12 meters in height!. This site is not just ruins; it is a symbol of the strength and resilience that has defined Amman throughout the ages.

Every angle I capture here leaves me in awe of the Roman craftsmanship, and how these columns still hold their majesty after all these years.

لما تمشي بين حجارة معبد هرقل، رح تشوف التيجان الكورنثية الضخمة ملقاة على الأرض كأنها قطع من لغز تاريخي كبير. دقة النحت الروماني فيها رغم السنين بتخليك تحس بعظمة المكان وقوته.

Walking among the stones of the Temple of Hercules, you’ll find massive Corinthian capitals scattered across the ground like pieces of a grand historical puzzle. The precision of the Roman craftsmanship, surviving through the ages, truly makes you feel the majesty and power of this ancient site

إذا بتركز بتيجان الأعمدة الموجودة بمعبد هرقل، رح تلاحظ دقة خيالية في فن النحت الروماني. النقوش اللي بتزين هاي التيجان بتتبع الطراز الكورنثي الفاخر، وأبرز ما فيها هو نحت أوراق نبات الأقنثوس (Acanthus Leaves). هاد النبات كان يرمز عند الرومان للخلود والفخامة، وبتلاحظوا كيف الأوراق منحوتة بطبقات فوق بعضها لتعطي شكل جمالي وحيوي للعمود. بالإضافة للأوراق، في لفائف حلزونية ناعمة عند الزوايا بتعطي انسيابية للتصميم، وهاد كله بفرجينا مهارة النحاتين في تحويل الحجر الصم لقطعة فنية ناطقة.

If you focus on the column capitals at the Temple of Hercules, you’ll notice the incredible precision of Roman sculpting. The carvings decorating these capitals follow the luxurious Corinthian order, most notably featuring the intricate Acanthus leaves. To the Romans, this plant symbolized immortality and grandeur. You can see how the leaves are sculpted in overlapping layers, giving the column a vibrant, organic feel. Along with the foliage, delicate spiral volutes at the corners add fluid balance to the design, showcasing the stone masons' mastery in turning solid rock into a detailed work of art.

تحفة العمارة الإسلامية: القصر الأموي | The Umayyad Palace: An Islamic Masterpiece

وإحنا عم نتمشى بالطرف الشمالي من جبل القلعة، مستحيل ما يلفت نظرنا "القصر الأموي". هاد القصر العريق بيرجع تاريخه للقرن السادس أو السابع الميلادي (حوالي سنة ٧٣٠ م)، وكان هو المركز الإداري والسكن للحاكم بهديك الفترة. أكثر شي بميزه هو "قاعة الاستقبال" اللي قبتها بتصميمها الداخلي بتعطيك شعور بالفخامة والهدوء. القصر بدمج بين الفن المعماري البيزنطي والإسلامي، وبفرجينا قديش كانت عمان محطة تاريخية وحيوية عبر العصور.

Located on the northern edge of the Citadel, the "Umayyad Palace" inevitably catches the eye. Dating back to the 6th or 7th century AD (around 730 AD), it served as the administrative center and the governor's residence. Its most striking feature is the "Audience Hall," where the interior design exudes luxury and tranquility. The palace blends Byzantine and Islamic architectural styles, showcasing how Amman has been a vital historical hub throughout the ages

وإنت ماشي بالقلعة، رح تلاقي حجار ضخمة متراكمة فوق بعضها وعاملة شكل قوس تاريخي، هاد المكان لسه صامد وبحكيلنا قصة عظمة الناس اللي بنته. القوس بيعطي اللقطة جمال خاص، وبخلينا ننبهر بقوة هالحجارة اللي عاشت آلاف السنين.

As you walk through the Citadel, you’ll find massive stones piled together, forming an ancient arch. This structure still stands today, telling the story of the great people who built it. The arch adds a unique touch to the view, making us marvel at the strength of these stones that have endured for thousands of years

نصيحة للزيارة | Visiting Tips

يفضل زيارة جبل القلعة قبل الغروب عشان تستمتع بالمناظر الخلابة، يعني الوقت بعد العصر هو وقت ممتاز جداً للزيارة، بتقدر خلاله تشوف إطلالة عمان من فوق من أعلى تلة بالمدينة.

- أوقات الدوام (صيفاً): من 8:00 صباحاً وحتى 7:00 مساءً.

- أسعار التذاكر: ربع دينار للأردني، و3 دنانير لغير الأُردنيين.

It is best to visit the Amman Citadel shortly before sunset to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Late afternoon is an ideal time for your visit, allowing you to see the panoramic view of Amman from the city's highest hill.

Opening Hours (Summer): 8:00 AM to 7:00 ـ PM.

Ticket Prices: 0.25 JOD for Jordanians and ـ 3 JOD for non-Jordanians.
